Bulgaria's cultural institutions — who they are and who pays for them

Every figure about this sector depends on which institutions are in it. So the register is split four ways, and each part says exactly what it claims: the state institutes whose principal is the Ministry of Culture, the national art schools, the cultural bodies answering to someone else, and those where държавен versus общински is still unsettled.

What you'll find

  • State cultural institutes — theatres, operas, museums and libraries under МК. This is the set every sector total means.
  • National art schools — МК's second-level spending units, and the sector's worst-competing layer.
  • Another principal — real cultural institutions somebody else pays for: the arts universities (МОН), and the БАН and Ministry of Defence museums. Shown, but outside every total.
  • Principal unresolved — regional museums, libraries and theatres, listed so they cannot drift.
