Explore the budget

Who spends the state's money, and on what? This page travels the budget one level at a time — pick a dimension, drill down, and the path stays visible so you know where you are.

Two dimensions, two different populations

  • By spending unit — the first-level spending units named in the State Budget Law, and each one's programmes a level deeper. Source: Ministry of Finance.
  • By function — expenditure by COFOG functional classification. The population here is DIFFERENT: Eurostat publishes the whole general-government sector (S13), which is the state plus municipalities and the social security funds. So the functional figures are not a breakdown of the state budget beside them — they are wider by construction.

Every amount can be read in euro, as a share of GDP, or as a share of the level you are in.
